The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), in conjunction with the ITS Joint Program Office, will be hosting a stakeholder workshop to help shape its long-range Road Weather Research Agenda.  This stakeholder workshop will be the first in a series of outreach and input sessions designed to engage stakeholders in helping to define future Road Weather research priorities.  The DOT is actively seeking participation from both transportation and weather professionals, with specific interest in transportation system user needs, and insights from private sector applications developers and providers.  Topics up for discussion will include needs surrounding:  Weather Observing Systems and Weather Forecasting Models (pertaining to surface transportation); Traffic Data and Transportation System Status; Decision Support Systems and Applications; and Management and Policy Decision-Making - Performance Measures.  The meeting will be held in Washington, DC the afternoon of Tuesday May 25th and the morning of Wednesday May 26th.  The meeting is free to attend, but registration is required.

Workshop for University Researchers Scheduled April 28-29 in Washington

The ITS Joint Program Office  (JPO) of the Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) of the USDOT is holding a Workshop for University Researchers April 28-29, 2010 in Washington, D.C. at USDOT Headquarters.  DOT is seeking input regarding how the ITS JPO can work collaboratively with universities to implement the new ITS Strategic Research Plan for the 2010-2014 timeframe.

The ITS Strategic Research Plan is designed to achieve a vision of a national, multi-modal surface transportation system that features a connected transportation environment among vehicles, the infrastructure, and passengers' portable devices.  This connected environment will leverage technology to maximize safety, mobility and environmental performance.

Workshop topics to be discussed include: Technical Areas of the Research Program and Application Development; Data Usage as it applies to the Strategic Plan; Environmental Applications; IntelliDriveSM Policies; Safety Applications; and Road Weather Applications.

In addition to attending the workshop in person, there will be an option to attend via webinar.  In-person registration is limited and will be confirmed on a first-come basis. IntelliDrive(SM) Pooled Fund Study: Research Teams for the Year 1 Program Selected

For the year 1 research program of the IntelliDriveSM Pooled Fund Study, the research teams that will be investigating three infrastructure oriented applications were selected. The list of applications along with the selected research teams are as following:

  • IntelliDriveSM Traffic Signal Control Algorithms by the University of Virginia Center for Transportation Studies,
  • Investigation of Pavement Maintenance Support Applications of IntelliDriveSM by Auburn University, and
  • Investigating the Potential Benefits of Broadcasted Signal Phase and Timing (SPAT) Data under IntelliDriveSM by the University of California PATH Program.

USDOT's ITS Strategic Research Plan 2010-2014 Online

USDOT has posted a Fact Sheet and Executive Summary of its forthcoming ITS Strategic Research Plan at
http://www.its.dot.gov/strat_plan/index.htm. The document outlines how USDOT plans to allocate research funding over the next five years, and assumes that USDOT's ITS research program will receive the same level of funding as previous years - $100 million per year for five years. In 2010, up to $77 million will be dedicated to multimodal research and an additional $14 million to technology transfer and evaluation. IntelliDriveSM research comprises $49 million of the multimodal research funds.

USDOT expects to release the full ITS Strategic Research Plan in May 2010.

Register Now for Jan 20 Webinar on IntelliDrive(SM) for Commercial Vehicles

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is hosting a webinar on Wednesday, Jan. 20 from 1:00 - 2:30 pm Eastern on IntelliDriveSM Safety Applications for Commercial Vehicles.

Deadline for registration is close of business (COB) Tuesday, Jan. 19. To register, go to http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/facts-research/art-webinars-future.asp and click on the heading "IntelliDriveSM Safety Applications for Commercial Vehicles."

The webinar will provide an overview of the IntelliDriveSM program, as well as more detailed information on research plans. In addition, there will be a discussion of the establishment of an IntelliDriveSM Commercial Vehicle Safety Working Group, envisioned to include vehicle equipment manufacturers, suppliers, fleets, researchers, and other stakeholders who are interested in participating in the research, development, and deployment of IntelliDriveSM Commercial Vehicle Safety Applications.

All interested parties are welcome to attend, including carriers and their safety managers, USDOT's State, local, and international partners, and FMCSA headquarters and field staff. An international phone number also will be provided.

Two IntelliDrive(SM) Pooled Fund RFPs Released

As part of the national IntelliDriveSM Pooled Fund Study entitled "Program to Support the Development and Deployment of Infrastructure IntelliDriveSM Applications," RFPs for two IntelliDrive applications were issued on December 4. These applications are: (1) Pavement Maintenance Support Applications; and (2) Investigating the Potential Benefits of Broadcasted Signal Phase and Timing (SPAT) Data.

Pooled Fund Studies are financed jointly by State highway agencies that share a common interest in a research topic.
