Benefits

Consumers

IntelliDriveSM technology applications that currently are being field tested are designed to deliver benefits to consumers in two broad categories:

  • Safety features that reduce the likelihood of crashes; and
  • Real-Time Travel Information, to save travel time while reducing environmental impact.

IntelliDriveSM will enable many other consumer applications, including electronic payment, remote diagnostics, and other commercial services.

IntelliDriveSM Safety Features Alert Drivers to Road Hazards

IntelliDriveSM may have the potential to save thousands of lives every year.

IntelliDriveSM safety alerts are designed to increase drivers' situational awareness, which increases reaction times. Even last-second warnings could give drivers additional time to brake, or perhaps even steer around a vehicle ahead of them. IntelliDriveSM safety features include:

  • Signal and Stop Sign Violation Warning - Drivers who are at risk of violating a red signal light or a stop sign receive a visual, haptic (physical), and/or audible warning from on-board equipment.
  • Curve Speed Warning - If the vehicle's speed is higher than recommended for the curve, the system warns the driver to slow down, or the vehicle can take preventative action.
  • Collision Warning and Crash Mitigation - IntelliDriveSM provides warnings to drivers who are approaching a slowed or stopped object too rapidly, or following a vehicle too closely. If a vehicle traveling ahead suddenly decelerates, the driver is notified so they are aware of the deceleration even if visibility is limited by weather conditions or obstructed by large vehicles. The system also warns drivers of impending side or rear-impact collisions, or when they are about to drift out of their lane. In the event of an impending crash, the car may take actions to reduce crash severity, such as tightening seat belts, deploying air bags, and/or moving seats back.
  • Road and Travel Condition Warning - The driver receives up-to-the-minute information about road, weather, and travel conditions in the local area - such as crashes, work zones, slippery road conditions, detours, traffic congestion, weather, parking restrictions, turning restrictions, and other situational elements that may have safety implications.

IntelliDriveSM Provides Real-Time Travel Information in Public Places

The I-95 Corridor Coalition is partnering with DOT to provide IntelliDriveSM real-time travel information applications online, in airports and shopping malls, and at Interstate welcome centers, to deliver consumers the information they need to make better travel choices before trips.

  • The website at http://www.i95travelinfo.net/ provides interactive maps to enable travelers to assess traffic conditions within and between major East Coast metro areas, at a glance. For example, travelers driving from Washington, DC to New York City can see whether there are any major incidents delaying travel on their route before they leave.
  • At Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) Airport, travelers will be able to access real-time information on the status of ground transportation options to and from the airport from kiosks located in the airport, as well as from the airport web site. Information about driving times, public transportation options and status of taxis, shuttle vans, and airport bus services will enable travelers to choose the ground transportation options that will work best for them.
  • At Tysons Corner Center, a shopping mall in McLean, VA, and at Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) welcome centers, large screen displays of travel time information will help shoppers and travelers plan their trips.

IntelliDriveSM is Greener

The real-time travel information delivered through IntelliDriveSM provides travelers with the tools they need to steer clear of congestion, saving time and fuel, and reducing pollutant emissions. Wasting fuel while idling in lines at toll booths and in parking lots may be reduced by IntelliDriveSM applications that enable drivers to make convenient wireless payments.

Future IntelliDriveSM applications could help drivers save fuel by advising them of the most efficient speed for flowing through traffic signals, or the most fuel-efficient route. On-board equipment also could alert vehicle owners when the vehicle needs to be serviced in order to operate with maximum fuel efficiency.
